Beschreibung

This volume contains critical papers that address central issues in the philosophy of Robert Audi. It examines this influential philosopher's attempt to develop a broad theory of rationality. He believed that this theory could not only explain the meaning of being rational. It could also overcome distances between theoretical and practical reasoning within philosophy. The contributors investigate relevant elements of Audi's work. Coverage reaches from the question of epistemological foundationalism and the possibility of testimony to the ethics of intuitionism, its relationship to deontological moral thinking, and the role of religion within public life in pluralistic societies. The papers do not only discuss Audi's attempt to develop a comprehensive system of philosophical rationality. The contributors also consider central challenges that any general theory of rationality has to meet to achieve the necessary quality standards and represent a convincing reconstruction of human reason's architecture with all its different forms, elements, and structures. The volume will be of enormous use to all scholars interested in the younger history of American philosophy and one of its leading figures. It will also appeal to philosophers and curious readers with an interest in the endeavor of designing one harmonizing, far-reaching theory of rationality.
